An above average vertical leap can in essence add inches to your height, and since there are no exercises or basketball drills that will make players taller, the best way to help players get up higher is to guide them through some basketball training exercises that will improve their jumping ability. It’s important to remember that you also want to be able to jump quicker than your opponent.

While it’s important to practice as a team and learn the fundamental concepts of offense and defense from your coach, it is equally important to practice on your own outside of the team in order to see significant individual improvement. Improving your skills individually will only help the team as you become a more confident and productive ball handler, passer, scorer and defender.

You can go to any park in America and see kids practicing shooting, dribbling and other offensive basketball skills. Very few people want to practice good defensive skills – skills that are necessary for a winning team.

But shooting in a practice or by yourself at a neighborhood court is very different to shooting in a game. In a game, a player’s shooting form needs to be automatic – they can’t be thinking about how to shoot, trying to get their elbows under the ball, gauging the arc needed. The shooting technique needs to come naturally, which is why coaches stress perfect practice, over and over.
